DIY Upcycled Denim: How to Add Crochet Edging to Jeans
Let’s be real - we all have that one pair of jeans sitting in the back of the closet. The fit is perfect, but the vibe? A little stale. Before you donate them or doomscroll for a replacement, why not give them a main character makeover?
Welcome to the world of DIY Upcycled Denim.
Adding crochet edging to denim is the ultimate "low effort, high reward" project. Whether you are aiming for a soft Cottagecore or Poetcore with scalloped pockets or a gritty Fairy Grunge look with distressed mohair cuffs, this technique is the secret sauce to personalizing your wardrobe.
Grab your hook and your favourite skein of Hype Yarn. We’re about to perform some surgery.
What You’ll Need
You don’t need a fancy sewing machine for this thrift flip.
Here is the kit:
The Denim: Jeans, a denim jacket, or even shorts. (Thrifted pieces work best because the fabric is usually softer!)
The Yarn: For durability, we recommend our [Link: Heavy Cotton Blend] for pockets and waistbands. If you want that fuzzy, halo effect for cuffs, grab our Hype Mohair Series.
Crochet Hook: Size 3.5mm or 4mm (depending on your yarn).
Embroidery Needle: A sharp needle (Chenille size 18-22) is crucial to pierce the denim.
Scissors & Ruler.
Step 1: Prep Your Denim
First, decide where you want your trim. Cuffs are the easiest place to start, but pocket rims and waistbands are top-tier stylish.
Pro Tip: If you want a raw edge look (very Fairy Grunge), cut the hem of your jeans first and pull a few threads loose before you start stitching.
Step 2: The Blanket Stitch Foundation
You can't just poke a crochet hook through denim (unless you want a broken hook and sad vibes). You need to create a "foundation row" using a sewing needle.
Thread your embroidery needle with your chosen yarn.
Do a Blanket Stitch along the edge of the fabric.
How to: Poke the needle through from back to front about 0.5cm from the edge. Before pulling tight, loop the thread under the needle. Pull through.
Keep your stitches evenly spaced—about 0.5cm apart. These loops are where you will work your crochet stitches later.
Step 3: Crocheting the Edge
Now for the fun part. Switch to your crochet hook.
Insert your hook under one of the blanket stitch loops you just made.
Pull up a loop and chain 1 to secure.
Row 1: Single Crochet (sc) into every blanket stitch loop around the edge. Slip stitch to join.
Step 4: Pick Your Aesthetic (The Trim Pattern)
Now that you have a row of Single Crochet, choose the vibe for your edging:
Option A: The "Cottagecore" Scallop
Best for: Pockets and shorts.
Pattern: Skip 2 stitches, 5 Double Crochet (dc) in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, slip stitch in the next. Repeat until the end.
Why we love it: It gives a soft, vintage doily look that pairs perfectly with our pastel cottons.

Option B: The "Cyber Y2K" Mesh
Best for: Cuffs and jacket hems.
Pattern: Chain 4, skip 1 stitch, Single Crochet in the next. Repeat. Why we love it: It creates a net-like, distressed look. Use a contrasting neon or black yarn for maximum impact.

Option C: The "Fairy Grunge" Picot
Best for: Subtle detailing.
Pattern: Single crochet in 3 stitches, Chain 3, slip stitch into the first chain (creating a little bump), Single crochet in next 3 stitches.
Why we love it: It looks organic and spiky, especially when used with fuzzy mohair yarn.

Why Yarn Choice Matters
When you are mixing textiles like denim and yarn, tension is key.
Cotton: If you use our one from our Cotton collection, your trim will be sturdy and machine washable. This is best for high-friction areas like pockets.
Mohair/Wool: If you use something from our Mohair collection or Wool range, hand-washing is a must, but the texture is unmatched.
